2020.10.23 00:58 SSF415 I watched "I Know What You Did Last Summer" (1997)

Every day in October for 30 days I'm watching a different scary movie, this year exploring the theme of horror stories set in small towns.
For a movie called “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” this flick sure does seem confused about what’s going on in the scene about last summer.
The deal is that four high school kids just about to depart their coastal fishing village for bigger and better things at college are out partying one last time and accidentally run a guy over. I thought maybe this was another charming smalltown graduation tradition and he’d turn out to be full of candy, but no such luck
Point of confusion number one is that the movie makes sure you know they were not driving drunk, but circumstances conspire that they think everyone will believe they were, which, yeah, okay, I’m sure that’s really how it happens all the time.
I guess I can see where screenwriter Kevin Williamson was going with this, because we wouldn’t want our main characters to seem unlikable or irresponsible while covering up vehicular manslaughter.
Everyone in the car agrees to a capital crime by helping dump the body, despite the fact that three of them really have nothing to lose by coming clean. So the movie asks us to presume that everyone is just that dedicated to keeping Freddie Prinze Jr out of prison, and my suspension of disbelief has taken pretty much all the beatings it can up to this point already.
You know just from the title that someone out there knows their secret and is plotting revenge, although it’s a revenge that appears pretty aimless for a while, as the killer must pad things out for the sake of reaching feature length by killing unrelated third parties and giving Sarah Michelle Geller a haircut.
At the time this movie sported something of an all-star cast, with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Buffy, and Ryan Phillipe starring alongside Prinze. Although these days I think “The Big Bang Theory’s” Johnny Gillecki is most famous face in the crowd, here stuck in a small role as a sex pest with the demeanor of that drill instructor from “Full Metal Jacket.”
This is a really great premise for a mystery, but the movie is terrible at maintaining any real suspense about the killer’s identity. We’re inundated with fishing imagery the whole time, but nobody ever reels in so much as a single decent red herring. I worked on that joke for a long time and it was so not worth it.
Williamson wrote the previous year’s “Scream,” which was, ah, a little bit of a hit. I thought about maybe revisiting that movie, but whereas its pop cultural legacy is very secure, “I Know” seems increasingly obscure, and I wondered if maybe it would turn out to be a hidden gem after all this time. Which, no, turns out this is less diamond in the rough so much as it’s pretty much all just rough.
“Venom” director Jim Gillespie is at the helm here. That’s not the 2018 Sony/Marvel “Venom,” that’s the 2005 undead slasher flop about a dead guy possessed by snakes. To be honest I’d really rather watch that one, but I’m a sick person and you should all stop giving me positive reinforcement.
Point is, whereas “Scream” had Wes Craven to fall back on there’s no steady hand at the wheel here, and as for the cast--well, Hewitt actually utters the phrase “I feel your pain” sans any kind of irony, so let’s not expect any miracles.
Williamson adapted this out of a book published nearly 25 years prior, but according to a News Lagoon story the two don’t bear much of a resemblance; the book is not a slasher, for one thing. In fact, that story says author Lois Duncan was “appalled” by the film, in part because her daughter actually was the victim of a gruesome teenage murder, one that remains unsolved. She even wrote a book about it; fucking hell, at least they didn’t turn THAT into a movie.
The smalltown setting really could work for a lot of tension here, since everybody is supposed to know everything about everybody else in these places. I mean, I didn’t know anybody in my hometown, but that’s how it’s supposed to go. This one’s just a dead fish.
A sequel came along just one year later, which is never a good sign, although in truth I think that one (set at a resort) is actually a little bit better. There’s a third film that I’ve never seen but have heard turns the franchise into a ghost story, which probably means it was an unrelated film hastily adapted into a sequel to a successful movie to provoke people like me into watching it...unsuccessfully in this case. I’m surprised too.
Tomorrow we’ll cut deep into a much, much more successful teen killer franchise.

2020.10.14 23:56 The_Lightning_Men Off topic: I Know What You Did Last Summer coming as a series

For many horror fans who were around for the resurgence of the slasher genre in he late 90's 'I Know' was seen as a companion piece to Wes and Kevin's brilliant Scream.
I always had a soft spot for this film and know many fans who felt the same way.
"The show will share a premise with the movie, in which a group of teenagers is stalked by a killer a year after a fatal accident on their graduation night, but put a modern spin on the material," the outlet reports.
Gossip Girl's Sara Goodman is writing and executive producing the show, which comes from Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures TV. The film starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze Jr. and grossed $125 million worldwide.
"We are thrilled to have I Know What You Did Last Summer with our incredible partners at Amazon Studios. Neal Moritz and Original Film's development consistently fires on all cylinders and that is proven once again with Sara Goodman’s contemporary and pulsating character weaving suspense thriller," said Sony Pictures TV Studios co-president Jason Clodfelter.
"The best horror franchises always have another scare coming, and this I Know What You Did Last Summer series from Sara Goodman is a perfectly twisted update to the iconic slasher movie. Any way you slice it, our global Prime Video customers will love this modern take on the fan favorite film." said Amazon's Albert Cheng

2020.10.14 20:12 HHSquad Oregon Trail Generation, a full Generation? Here's how I see it.

I recently put this up in the generationology subreddit, I wanted to see what you guys thought about it. Its outside the box, but it makes sense to me and makes you guys a true generation, not a cusper.
The Oregon Trail Generation (1972 - August 1983, 11.5+ years) begins at the time of U.S. troop drawdown from Vietnam, the Watergate burglary was happening and the Space Shuttle program was greenlighted. By the end of the year Nixon would be elected to a 2nd term, though it would be mired in the Watergate scandal. The last of this generation were born during the first Space Shuttle Challenger launches and IBM spreadsheet program Lotus 1-2-3 was introduced and prospering. They are the last generation to graduate high school before the tragic events of 9/11.
The birth of band members from Green Day (all members), Matchbox 20, and Blink 182 in 1972 marked the beginning of a departure from GenX musically, and the posterboys for this generation. This generation includes the main quartet of the movie Cruel Intentions (Selma Blair, Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe) and the entire younger cast in My So-Called Life. Late 90's horror stars like Neve Campbell, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Rose McGowan, Freddie Prinze Jr, and Drew Barrymore are from this generation also . Most of this generation are the kids of the Baby Boomers (1946-1959).
Fun Fact (coincidental, but perfect) - The game Oregon Trail made its debut on December 3rd, 1971....less than a month before the generation started! It thus grew with the generation that bears its name. Many from this generation remember the game as it was introduced into schools about 1985 and was very popular with the younger students.
The Oregon Trail Generation is tied to the 1990's very tightly, they are the first generation to graduate high school in the 1990's. This is the generation that took the grunge music and style created by GenX to heart, they encompassed all of the teens (they were 8-19 years old) when Smells Like Teen Spirit was released in 1991, and they were the most populous group at the Lollapolooza concerts (along with some late Xers) in the 1990's, though the bands themselves were mostly Xers. MTV had transitioned from constant videos to the inclusion of reality TV programs by this time. But MTV animated shows like Beavis and Butthead and Daria were favorites among the OT Generation.
Unlike Generation X, this generation came of age in more prosperous times and were generally more optimistic then GenXers. They were also more savvy with the computers then GenX as they were introduced to them at a younger age in school, although they would not be on the commercial internet until at least high school, a dividing point with Millenials. While Gen X was more oldest school gamers, GenY grew up with Nintendos NES and SNES systems, and the development of the PC as a platform for games. They were just as likely to play original DOOM on the PC as Link to the Past on the SNES. The Oregon Trail Generation were the generation that had the best of both worlds, analog for a good portion of their life, but on the internet before the age of 25. Thus they tend to be good mediators or Bosses as they can bridge between older and younger generations.
A generation born at the right time for cartoons, arguably the golden age for cartoons. The Simpsons, He-Man, Thundercats, Voltron, Batman: The Animated Series, Transformers, et all were all during this period. As teens they enjoyed new shows like The X-Files, Seinfeld, Friends, and Star-Trek: The Next Generation. They also had a rare realistic capsule in time TV show that featured all GenY kids, My So-Called Life, one of the most perfect representations of teens at that time. Luckily this short-lived show re-ran on MTV in the late 1990's and gathered a considerable cult following. It doesn't help to run against Friends in the mid-90's!
From Billy Joe Armstrong (02/17/72) - Chris Hemsworth (08/11/83)
Honorary member:
Jared Leto (12/26/71) Why? Because you can't leave an important My So-Called Life actor and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman out. Besides this generation was once called Generation Catalano!

2020.10.09 16:09 Isotope-001 Baby Alien Clues and Guesses [Spoilers]

DISCLAIMER: There will be follow up posts to this one, and maybe one with new guesses if certain clues are revealed.
MAYOR EDIT: I now have a definitive profile for the Baby Alien.
Height: Aprox. 6ft. The way the costume is built has a shouldee harness around the 2/3 point of the black circle surrounding Baby Alien. Baby Alien's costume is taller than Nick, but a little smaller than Watcha Macallit based on new promos.
Age: 41 - 46. Baby Alien said he had a poster of Jenny on his wall as a teenager. Jenny hadn't done Playboy until 1994. Meaning that at max they were 19 when they had the poster, making them 45. Minimum 41, because I don't know if any parent would allow their 14 year old have a Playboy poster, so 15 is the most I could stretch it to.
Career: Extensive theatre work, including Broadway, hasn't been in the spotlight for a while.
Second Mayor Edit: Proof of the profile listed: https://www.reddit.com/TheMaskedSingecomments/j9wojn/the_baby_alien_inner_workings_proof_of_profile/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Third Major Edit: TMS Twitter being unsubtle: https://www.reddit.com/TheMaskedSingecomments/jb36nc/tms_twitter_isnt_being_subtle_spoilers/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
this is sort of the "more organized mega post" I am making for the Baby Alien guesses and evidence available. Hi! Please, let's try to be civil.
Baby Alien Clues and Performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blJxEiS3dnM So this is a bit of a follow up after some input on my first two post, and I wanted to try out the whole “guessing identity” game. This is what I have got so far:
The 4 main guesses are:
Freddie Prinz Jr.
Sam Riegel
Jason Segal
Seth Green
In terms of likelihood, Sam Riegel and Jason Segal are the most likely of the 2 based on what we know. But addressing the other guesses:
Seth Green: The basis of this guess is his experience with puppets and his general height. The issue with this is the fact that his accolades far surpass anything listed with the Emmy nominations and wins.
Freddie Prinz Jr: While there are some connections, the main issue is his voice. I couldn’t really find a clip of him singing, but the way he speaks has a much deeper voice than what the Baby Alien sounds like. For reference, look up his voice work on Kanan Jaruss, a fairly deep raspy voice.
As for our main two contestants:
Jason Segal: Interview voice sounds very similar to the Baby Alien. But the singing voice seems to be different. The frame of reference I am using for this is his duet with NPH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhXsJjVdj1E , since his song in the Muppets movie is a bit modified. Generally, he seems like a better singer than Baby Alien, and his voice here seems huskier than nasally. Of course, he could be modifying his voice.
Sam Riegel: As of the first clue package, he seems like the likeliest candidate for Baby Alien. The clues line up, but here are some standouts:
First things first, vocal comparison: listen to the performance listed above, and compare it to this: https://youtu.be/A4BuL886bJA
Ninja Turtle Baloon: Voiced Donatello in the Ninja Turtles animated series.
Parade: He was born the year of the US bicentennial, where a parade with similar floats was held in DC
Horseshoe: Has a running gag of being a Colts fan, and rivaling with one of his cast members on CR
Number #5: CR has been running for 5 years
Spiky Bubble hair: Did the VO work for Pheonix Wright
Extensive theatre career: Was known for being frequently in the theatre at a very young age, including Broadway
Biggest Piece: Sam Riegel tweeted out this Wednesday that “It’s a bourbon and George Michael kinda night. #faithfaithfaith” before deleting AND REPLACING the tweet. Super specific reference, and one that was deleted not even 5 minutes after posting?
Now, the biggest claim that people use to counter this guess is his general fame. Now, this actually works IN FAVOR of the Baby Alien’s identity.
In the clue package, the Baby Alien said he had been a second thought to many for a while. Sam Riegel used to be a prominent theatre actor as a kid and was on the Broadway show for the sound of music and traveling the US on the traveling production for Les Miserables. Sam Riegel is also a prominent animation director, “I just get to act, with actors who are way better than me, ya know academy award-winning actors, I’ve directed Jon Hamm, I’ve directed Snoop Dog, I’ve directed Cher, I’ve directed amazing people, and I get to do scenes with them.” - Sam Riegel in an interview.
Also, the clue package mentions a shift into other passions after broadway, showing a Liberty Bell, A Ninja Turtle, and the TMS logo. He got into Voice Acting and directing later in life, which includes TMNT.
But of course, why would they pick Sam? I mean, if people like Jordyn Woods and Barry Zito have been on, I don’t think that Sam (especially with his theatre background) would be that much of a stretch, especially if he also lives in LA, and works with Disney.
I would love to hear your guys guesses!
Future Edits: Also, found Sam doing a similar accent Baby Alien in his interview: https://youtu.be/82aZBI4l_OQ
Also, in the theme song for their DnD show, a lyric is literally "your fates in your hands", which could be what the "Destiny in My hands" comment refers.
Also, "Puppet Master" could be a loose refrence to Dungeon Master.
For the Bell clue: In 1976, Britian presented the US a replica of the Liberty Bell know as the Bicentennial Bell. Sam Riegel was born that year, the year of the Bicentennial. He has jokingly gloated about this in an interview before: https://www.nps.gov/inde/learn/historyculture/bicentennialbell.htm
Absent from Class Clue: Sam has stated that becauss of his Theatre endeavors, he skipped a whole year of school. He just didn't attend 8th grade and went on to the next year.
Driving to City Clue: Went to NYC as a kid to perform on Broadway, apparently had a red racer car bed as a kid too.
Image of the Tweet: https://www.reddit.com/TheMaskedSingecomments/j7uggt/hard_evidence_for_baby_alien_spoilers/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Philidelphia/Cheese Stake + Tony Awards connection: One of the main stops on the First Nation Les Mis which Sam was a part of was Philidelphia Pennsylvania. Along with that, one of the stops was the Shubert Theatre in Boston, a theatre stage where the Tony Awards has been hosted on twice, both in 1976 and 1977.

2020.10.03 20:26 Prof_Tickles Definitive proof that the sequel trilogy did have a plan all along. Despite outward appearances.

In order to really drive home how this works out in the long run I have to take this back to the beginning so bear with me. I’m going to use what Freddie Prinze jr said on a podcast a while back then build off of it so it ties into my final point. (I’ll link the short clip at the end)
When Palpatine perverted the force to an unfathomable degree the force finally decided that the Sith were no longer a manageable nuisance and needed to be dealt with.
The force creates a “chosen one,” to be borne by Shmi Skywalker. Years later the hope of the universe is discovered by the Jedi then trained.
Palpatine, being the cunning strategist he is knows he cannot kill Anakin otherwise the force will retaliate with something even greater. Something he truly cannot conquer. So what does Sheev do? He seduces Anakin. Throwing a wrench in the Force’s grand plan. Or so he thinks. Unbeknownst to him Anakin is still the chosen one, regardless of the plot twist.
So the force, upon seeing that there’s now TWO Sith, creates twins Luke & Leia.
But Luke/Leia are babies they cannot help Anakin, nor can they effect him in the way he needs to be effected so what does the force for the time being until they grow up? It clears the path.
Jedi like Ashoka, Cal Kestis, Kanan, Ezra etc have a critical role. Their job is to eliminate roadblocks. Inquisitors, assassins, what have you. So by the time Luke is old enough it’s just him and Vader. Nobody to get in between a critical confrontation. Because Luke offers Vader the one thing he needs, the thing he turned to the dark side over. The only thing that can bring Anakin back to fulfill his destiny: FAMILY.
Should Luke fail, then Leia is the backup plan.
Fast Forward years later.
Palpatine perverts the force in grander fashion then ever before by finding a way to cheat death. But the force is smart. The force KNOWS Palpatine and his personality. Palpatine’s ego won’t allow him to accept defeat so out of spite he corrupts the descendant of the person who defeated him. Take that Force! Win for the Sith...or so he thinks.
The force has a plan. This time it’s salty so it’s going to do a little spiting of it’s own. It’s going to create a dyad between Ben and not just any random girl, oh no the force wants to add insult to injury. So it makes the second half of the dyad Rey. The forgotten heir of Palpatine.
But there’s still a problem. 2 Dark siders/1 Jedi.
In order for this plan to work there needs to be two Jedi. So it sets a chain of events into motion, with the end goal of bringing Ben Solo back to the light. In order to do this a few people need to clear the roadblocks once again.
Han needs to help. To show his son that hope is not lost. Luke needs to apologize, to remind him that hope isn’t lost in him, and Leia needs to do the same.
That way the big player, Rey can be the final seed. Because Rey offers Ben the thing he needs most. Hope and for someone to like him for who he is. Not just view him as a legacy as Han/Leia & Luke did.
It works. The dyad unifies, and defeats Palpatine.
BUT the force being all knowing had a third option. A backup plan had Ben chose to remain loyal to the dark side. Then kill Palpatine.
Know who/what the alternate was? The bench warmer?
Finn.
:)
P.S. here’s the explanation by Freddie Prinze

2020.10.01 04:19 VforVendetta90 Season 4 Group B Guesses Post Singing

  1. Crocodile - So in the clues says he grew up in Hollywood (meaning potential child star), you see an Italian flag, hes surrounded by stars and mentions wicked. So my main guess is Joey Lawrence who started acting young, he is part Italian, he was on Dancing With The Stars, and he was in a film called Wicked Vendetta. My backup guess is Milo Ventimiglia who started acting at 18 grew up in Anaheim (40 mins from Hollywood), he is Italian and wicked could be linked to his role from the cult hit Hereos.
  2. Baby Alien - There was Ferris Buller Day Off, Lost In Space, Friends & Buffy references throughout the clue video. Also mentioned Tony Awards, a karate balloon, a car, and the liberty bell (Philadelphia) are all seen in the video. My main guess is Ralph Macchio he was in the Tony Award winning musical How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, he was in Karate Kid, he was at Wizard World Philly. My backup guess is Freddie Prinze Jr. he appeared on Friends, he is married to Sarah Michelle Gellar who played buffy, and in Summer Catch his character was scouted by the Philadelphia Phillies.
  3. Seahorse - There was a big western theme, a rainbow frog, stuffed animals, tea, a hog with wards (perhaps a Harry Potter reference?), and claimed to be a Diva. My main guess is Kesha she is a big LBGTQ activist, theres a Kesha Harry Potter parody on Tik Tok, shes had stuffed animals in many of her music videos and her song Timber was a western theme, My backup guess is Demi Lovato who is also a big LBGTQ activist, the stuffed animals could link to her being a Disney star. '
  4. Whatchamacallit - Mentioned dancing with the stars, the clock shows the Teddy Bear (Sarah Palin), shrimp, turntable, and khaki pants. Mention others took his spot light also. My main guess is Romeo who was on Dancing With The Stars, he is also a rapper and son of Master P (who was also on Dancing With The Stars and always wore khakis) and always lived in his fathers shadow. He is also 5'11 and use to play basketball matches the height seeing he was almost Nick Cannon height and hes 6'0. My back up guess is Jazzy Jeff who is a DJ hence the turn tables and he was always second to Will Smith hence the others took my spot light reference. He is also 5'10.
  5. Serpent - Shows he had a choice between musicology and medicine, he was a trouble maker until his dad Serpent Sr saved him, many Caribbean references and history references. My main guess is Leslie Odom Jr who is a talented singer who also played a doctor on Murder On The Orient Express. His character from Hamilton Aaron Burr is from the Caribbean, he is a Jr. hence the Sr. reference and honestly the voice matches very well. I am fairly convinced on my main guess but if I had to give a backup guess I would say perhaps Brian McKnight who is married to a doctor, has a similar vocal range, and his father is called Claude McKnight Sr.

2020.09.30 00:25 gallerton18 Kanan Jarrus was born on Lothal

So I actually got this idea from a brilliant Tumblr post which I will credit in this post at the bottom for anyone curious to read. For those not curious I’ll summarize. So first up, how do we know this? We don’t explicitly but there’s certainly some evidence. So in the episodes “Kindred” and “Crawler Commandos” we see a mural (which you can view in this post). In this mural off to the left side you can see a few figures who very clearly look like Ki Adi Mundi, Yoda and another Jedi. You can even see they have lightsabers on their hips. These figures are holding up what appears to be a baby in the mural, and according to Freddie Prinze Jr are what tell us the origin of Kanan and that the images are maybe not as old as we think (I’ll link the article for that at the bottom as well). So that’s the most overt and obvious but what else?
His connection to Lothal and Ezra Throughout the entire series of Rebels they are constantly brought back to Lothal and at the start Ezra. Kanan in particularly connects with Ezra which could be chalked up to just being a master and apprentice but it would make sense due to their shared heritage. Kanan remarks in season 4 as well that they always end up returning to Lothal. Other than that as the Tumblr post points out Kanan and Ezra both are very connected to the Loth-Wolves and share something more with them. This is particularly shown in the creature Dume. Being that Dume exists as a Loth-Wolf and is heavily connected to the Temple it would seem strange for this to happen to any Jedi right? That combining with Palpatine later mentioning that Kanan’a death has actually altered the fate of Lothal (I feel this is a lesser argument as this could be attributed more to the Force in general than Lothal).
So yeah I hope you enjoyed it and please do read the post I got this idea from and the article as both are fascinating! Lemme know your thoughts below!
